# Ingredients:

→ Dough Ingredients

01 - 1 teaspoon salt
02 - 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, with extra for rolling out
03 - 1 large egg, room temp
04 - 1/4 cup sugar
05 - 1/2 cup milk, not cold
06 - 1/4 cup water (warm is best)
07 - 2 1/4 teaspoons (a single yeast packet) active dry yeast
08 - 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks, chilled)

→ Strawberry Cream Mixture

09 - 1/4 cup sugar granules
10 - 8 ounces of softened cream cheese
11 - Fresh strawberries, sliced (used as topping)
12 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence

→ Optional Icing Drizzle

13 - 1 cup confectioner's sugar
14 - 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essence
15 - 2 tablespoons water or milk

# Steps:

01 - Mix the yeast into your warm water and let it settle until the top is bubbly. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
02 - Using a big bowl, stir the bubbly yeast mix with milk, egg, sugar, salt, and half of the flour. Keep stirring until it's smooth. Then add the remaining flour and mix until a dough comes together.
03 - Blend the chilled butter into the dough, folding and turning the dough repeatedly to make layers. Let it chill in the fridge for no less than an hour.
04 - Sprinkle some flour on your surface, roll the dough until it's about a quarter-inch thick, and use a heart-shaped cutter (or shape it manually).
05 - Move the cutouts to a parchment-covered baking pan and keep them in a warm spot. Give them 30 minutes or so to puff up slightly.
06 - Set your oven to 375°F (190°C).
07 - Beat together softened cream cheese, vanilla essence, and sugar. You can chop up some strawberries to mix in or save the fruit as a topping.
08 - Pop a little bit of the filling mix into the center of your heart-shaped pieces. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until they look lightly golden.
09 - Whisk the powdered sugar with milk or water, plus vanilla, until it's smooth.
10 - Once your pastries cool down a bit, drizzle the glaze on top (if you made it). Add fresh strawberry slices if you didn't include them in the mix.

# Helpful Notes:

01 - Keep the butter cold before blending it with the dough. This helps make flakier layers.
02 - Let the treats cool a little before putting glaze on to avoid melting it off.
03 - Adjust the dough's thickness to figure out how you like the balance of filling and pastry.
